His Wife Broke Down Crying When She Heard His Sister Planned to Name Her Baby After The Daughter They Lost, and Now His Sister Is Angry He Asked Her to Choose Something Else
A 35-year-old man was thrilled when his 25-year-old sister announced she was expecting her first baby, a girl. Then, during a casual phone call, she told him the name she’d chosen.
It was the same name he and his wife had given their stillborn daughter. When he asked her to choose something else, his sister refused, and now their mom is siding with her.
A Sister’s First Pregnancy
His sister is about 20 weeks along and busy preparing for her daughter’s arrival. The whole family has been excited for her and her partner.
She lives with their mother. Together, they’ve been getting her home and life ready for a new baby.
A Family Living Far Away
He lives in another state with his wife and their two daughters, ages 3 and 1. Distance means he isn’t there for every moment, but he stays in touch.
He’s grateful for the children he has. Getting there, though, came with deep heartbreak.
A Daughter They Lost
Before their first living child, he and his wife lost a baby girl to stillbirth. The loss devastated them.
They held a funeral to honor her, with most of the family there to support them. Choosing her name was one of the few ways they could give her a lasting place in their lives.
A Funeral She Missed
His sister didn’t attend the funeral. She said she had work commitments she couldn’t get out of.
She has since visited the baby’s grave. He assumed she understood how much that loss still meant to them.
A Name Shared on a Phone Call
A few days ago, he called to see how she was doing. He asked if she’d picked a name, not really expecting her to share it.
She told him the name, and it was the same name as his daughter who died. He was so stunned that he quickly acknowledged it and ended the call.
Tears at Home
When he told his wife, she broke down crying. The name carries so much grief for them, and it isn’t a common one.
They couldn’t understand why his sister would choose it, knowing their history. They decided he needed to ask her directly.
A Request for a Different Name
He messaged her to ask why she picked it. She said she simply thought it was a beautiful name.
He told her they thought so too, which is why they gave it to their first child before she died. He explained that they weren’t comfortable with her using it and asked her to choose another one.
His sister said the name was important to her and that they needed to accept it and move on. She’s now angry that he put her in such a difficult position.
A Mother Who Took Her Side
Their mother has sided with his sister. She told him he should be more supportive and show the name love, knowing how much it meant to him.
He’s struggling to see it that way. With his sister’s due date getting closer, he’s left wondering whether asking her to change the name was fair, or whether he’ll have to hear his late daughter’s name every time the family gathers.
