He Refused to Sign Away His Parental Rights, and After Several Failed Custody Petitions, His Ex Is Now Asking Him for Money, Babysitting, and Help With Her New Baby
A man shares two children with his ex, and for years she and her now-husband tried to push him out of their lives. They pressured him to give up his parental rights and repeatedly went to court seeking sole custody.
Now her husband has been diagnosed with a serious condition that left him using a wheelchair and unable to work, and the couple has a 4-month-old baby. His ex wants him to become part of their support system, from babysitting to grocery runs, and he’s not sure how to respond.
Two Kids and a Split When They Were Small
He and his ex broke up when their children were about 2 and a half and 1. Since then, they’ve shared custody.
After the breakup, his ex had an on-and-off relationship with the man she later married. Once he moved in, things between the parents got more complicated.
He wanted to stay fully involved in his kids’ lives. He made sure he was there for every parenting day he could.
Excuses to Cut His Time
His ex often found reasons to keep the kids during his time. She’d say they were sick and should stay with her.
He always told her he was fully capable of caring for them when they were sick. He didn’t want to miss time with them.
Other times, she’d say they were delayed while traveling. He’d offer to drive and pick them up himself so his time wouldn’t be lost.
Pressure to Sign Away His Rights
Over time, he felt they were trying to make her partner the main father figure. He refused to let that happen.
After they married, the pressure got worse. They told him signing away his parental rights would make everyone’s lives easier.
He told them it would only make things easier for them, while his children would suffer. Her husband even said the kids would forget him if he stepped aside.
Repeated Custody Petitions
His ex tried several times to sue for primary and sole custody. She argued that a two-parent home with her would be better than the 50-50 schedule they had.
Each time, judges rejected her requests. In one case, it didn’t even make it in front of a judge.
Custody battles can be expensive. Attorney fees and court costs can add up to thousands of dollars, even when a case is denied.
Kids Who Grew Closer to Him
The attempts to push him out had the opposite effect. His children grew closer to him.
He believes the conflict damaged their relationship with their mom and her husband. The kids came to rely on him even more.
Today, he continues to share custody. His focus has always been on staying present for his children.
New Baby and a Life-Changing Diagnosis
Four months ago, his ex and her husband welcomed a baby. During her pregnancy, her husband was diagnosed with a condition affecting his spine.
He now uses a wheelchair and can no longer work. That’s created major financial and emotional strain for their household.
Losing an income can be overwhelming, especially with a newborn. Medical costs, childcare, and everyday bills can quickly pile up.
Requests for Money, Babysitting, and Groceries
Near the end of her pregnancy, his ex asked him for money several times. He said no.
After the baby was born, she asked why he hadn’t brought a gift. More recently, she’s asked him to babysit during her husband’s appointments, help with groceries, and take on other responsibilities.
She told him they need to come together as one family so her youngest isn’t left with less. He’s refused each request.
Support for His Children and Nothing More
He’s told her he’ll keep supporting their two children. He’s also offered to take them more often if she needs help.
She told him that’s not what she’s asking for. He’s chosen to ignore her repeated requests, but they haven’t stopped, and he’s left wondering how to protect his boundaries with a couple who once tried to push him out of his own children’s lives.
