He Promised His Kids a Science Museum Trip, and His Wife Swore Helping Her Sister Move Would Only Take a Couple of Hours, but She Knew It Was an All-Day Job
A 35-year-old man had promised his kids a trip to a science museum on a Saturday. When his wife agreed to help her sister move that same day, she told him she’d only be gone a couple of hours.
She ended up gone until late afternoon, and he later learned she’d known all along it would be an all-day job. Now she’s upset that he didn’t cover for her when her sister thanked him for being so understanding.
Seven Years and Two Kids
He and his 33-year-old wife have been married for seven years. They have two children, ages 5 and 7.
With young kids, weekends often revolve around family plans. Coordinating schedules is part of keeping everything running smoothly.
A Saturday Already Planned
A few weeks earlier, his wife told him she’d agreed to help her sister move. He said that was fine.
He reminded her he’d already promised the kids a trip to the science museum that day. She assured him she’d be back before lunch.
Home Before Lunch
The plan seemed simple. She’d help her sister for a few hours, then the family would go about their day.
He didn’t see a reason to change his plans. Based on what she’d told him, there wouldn’t be a conflict.
Texts That Kept Changing the Plan
Around 9 a.m. on Saturday, she texted that her sister needed more help than expected. Later, she sent another message saying she probably wouldn’t be home until late afternoon.
That changed the whole day. Instead of a family outing, he’d be handling both kids alone.
A Museum Trip Solo
He took the kids to the museum by himself, and it went fine. Still, managing two young children on an outing is very different from sharing the day with another parent.
Museum trips aren’t free either. Admission, snacks, parking, and gift shop requests can easily add up, especially when one parent is managing everything.
A Moving Truck She Knew About
Later, he found out his wife knew the night before that her sister had rented a moving truck. That meant the move was always going to take most of the day.
She never told him. He felt she let him believe she’d be back early even though she already knew otherwise.
A Thank-You at Dinner
That evening, her sister called during dinner and casually thanked him for being so understanding. He replied that he hadn’t really been given much of a choice.
His wife looked annoyed. After the call ended, she told him he should have smiled and let it go because her sister already felt guilty.
I Knew You’d Say No
He explained that he wasn’t upset about her helping her sister. He was upset that she committed to plans that affected the whole family without talking to him first.
His wife then admitted she didn’t ask because she knew he’d say no. To him, that made things worse, and now he’s left wondering whether he should have covered for her or whether being honest was the only fair response.
