Her Sister Ordered $38 Crayon Costumes for All Five Grandkids Without Asking, Then Left Her 7-Year-Old Out of the Family Photo When She Refused to Pay Her for it
A woman spent three weekends helping her 7-year-old son build a garbage truck costume out of a big moving box. He loves it so much that he’s been wearing it around the house since September.
Then her sister ordered matching crayon costumes for every grandchild and texted her a bill for $38. When she refused to pay, her son was left out of the family photo, and her sister called them out online.
A Homemade Garbage Truck
The costume started as a large cardboard moving box. Together, she and her son turned it into a garbage truck.
They added flashlights for headlights and a lid on the back that flips open and closed. To him, it’s the best costume he’s ever had.
Three Weekends of Building
The project took three full weekends to finish. It became something special they built side by side.
Homemade costumes often cost very little in money but a lot in time and creativity. For her son, that effort made the costume feel even more meaningful.
A Yearly Cousins Photo
Every year, her sister organizes a matching costume photo of all five grandkids at a pumpkin patch. It’s become a family tradition.
This year, her sister decided the kids would dress as a box of crayons. She ordered five costumes online without checking with the other parents first.
Five Crayons at $38 Each
Each crayon costume cost $38. Altogether, her sister spent $190 on outfits for the group photo.
For many families, $38 isn’t a tiny expense, especially for a costume a child may only wear once. That money could go toward groceries, school supplies, or other activities.
A Text Demanding Payment
The day the costumes arrived, her sister texted her to say she owed $38. Nobody had asked her ahead of time if she wanted to buy one.
She replied that her son already had a costume and that she wasn’t going to pay for one he didn’t ask for. She also thanked her sister but made it clear she didn’t agree to the purchase.
An Offer for One Picture
She offered a compromise. Her son could wear the crayon costume for the photo, but her sister would keep it afterward.
Her sister refused. She said that if the costume wasn’t paid for, he couldn’t wear it.
Standing Off to the Side
Last weekend at the pumpkin patch, her son wore his garbage truck costume. Her sister lined up the other four grandkids for the crayon photo and told him to stand off to the side.
Instead of making him watch, she took him over to a giant pumpkin and snapped her own photos. He happily opened and closed the lid on his costume the whole time and didn’t seem to notice what had happened.
A Caption Aimed at Her
That night, her sister posted the crayon picture online. The caption said four out of five crayons and suggested someone didn’t want to be part of the family tradition.
Her mom thinks she should have just paid the $38 and let him wear it for the photo. She’s left wondering whether standing firm over a costume her son never asked for was worth the family drama, especially when he was perfectly happy in the one he built himself.
