Her Sister Accused Her of Being Hurtful for Not Letting Her Nieces Bring a Friend on a Trip She Planner (and Paid for) To Help Her Heal After Divorce
A woman who went through a painful divorce earlier this year planned a getaway for what would have been her 10th wedding anniversary. Her sister and two nieces ended up joining, and then her sister asked if the girls could bring a friend along on the trip she’s paying for.
She said no. Now her sister is calling her hurtful, threatening to skip the trip, and their mom wants her to apologize to keep the peace.
A Divorce Earlier This Year
Her marriage ended earlier this year after a difficult relationship. Leaving was hard, and the months since have been a period of rebuilding.
Milestones like an anniversary can bring up a lot of emotion after a divorce. She wanted to mark the date with something that felt freeing instead of painful.
A Getaway Over a Hard Anniversary
Over the summer, she told her sister she was planning a long weekend away over the anniversary date. Her sister said it sounded fun and suggested she and her two daughters, ages 13 and 15, could come since it lined up with their school break.
She was open to it and sent over a few options. It seemed like a nice chance to spend time with family during a tough moment.
A Sister Who Invited Herself Along
When she later checked in about plans, her sister said they might only be able to come for an afternoon because they were too busy. That changed the shape of the trip considerably.
To make it work for them, she looked for places closer to where her sister lives. Everything nearby was far beyond her budget, especially since she was covering the full cost of the trip.
Back to a Solo Plan
She told her sister she was going back to her original idea of a solo trip farther away. If she happened to find a place that could fit them too, she’d book it, but she wasn’t going to plan around them.
Her sister said that was fine. As far as she knew, the plans were settled.
A Dog-Friendly Rental With Just Enough Beds
She eventually found a cute, dog-friendly rental with exactly enough beds for everyone. She booked it and let her sister know.
Covering lodging for four people for a long weekend is a real expense. Depending on the location and season, a rental like that can easily cost several hundred dollars a night or more, all coming out of her own pocket.
A Request for One More Guest
Then she woke up to a text from her sister saying the girls wanted to bring a friend. Her sister said she’d told them it was up to her aunt, since she was the one paying.
She replied no. She didn’t want a child she’d never met on a trip meant to help her through a painful anniversary, and she thought it was rude to ask.
An extra guest would also mean more cost. Another person adds food, activities, and possibly fees, and there wasn’t even a bed for a fifth person in the rental she’d booked.
Too Awkward to Come
Her sister said the text hurt her feelings. When they talked on the phone, her sister explained that she always likes her kids to have friends around and that her sister couldn’t understand because she doesn’t have teenagers.
She explained that she planned to spend the weekend drinking plenty of wine, hiking, relaxing in the hot tub, and playing music without worrying about the lyrics. Having a stranger’s child there would make that inappropriate, and she felt her sister should have simply told her daughters no instead of making her the one to decide.
Her sister then said maybe they wouldn’t come because it would be awkward. She told her that was fine and there were no hard feelings, but her sister still accused her of being hurtful.
An Apology Her Mom Wants
Their mom says she sees both sides and wants her to apologize to smooth things over. She thinks that’s ridiculous, since she was simply accepting her sister’s decision.
She’s paying for a trip that was supposed to help her heal, and now it’s turned into a family argument. With the anniversary weekend approaching, she’s left wondering whether she’ll end up traveling with family, alone, or with a lingering rift that follows her home.
