Flight attendant getting angry with a male passenger

A Flight Attendant Told Him to Take the Dirty Diaper to the Restroom, and the Moment She Walked Away, He Put It Right Back in the Seatback Pocket

A woman was on the second leg of a very long journey home from overseas, completely worn out after hours of travel. She was seated on the aisle next to a young father and his toddler son.

When she woke from a brief nap, the dad was changing his son’s diaper right there in the middle seat. Then he tucked the dirty diaper into the seatback pocket, and after a flight attendant told him to take it to the restroom, he put it right back.

The Last Leg of a Very Long Trip

She was flying home after an international trip. This flight was the final leg of a long and exhausting journey.

International travel can be expensive and draining. Between long-haul tickets that often cost $1,000 or more and hours spent in airports and planes, many travelers arrive home completely worn out.

By the time she boarded, she was running on very little sleep. She just wanted to get home.

Too Tired to Sleep, Too Tired to Stay Awake

She rarely sleeps well on planes. At best, she manages to doze off for a few minutes here and there.

About an hour into the flight, she finally drifted off. It was the first rest she’d had in a while.

When she woke up, she wasn’t expecting anything unusual. What she saw caught her completely off guard.

Seated Beside a Dad and His Toddler

She was in an aisle seat in the middle section of the plane. Beside her sat a young father and his son, who looked about 2 years old.

The boy was in the middle seat, and his dad was on the opposite aisle. At first, the trip seemed perfectly normal.

She understands that flying with a toddler isn’t easy. Long flights can be tough for little kids and their parents.

Diaper Change in the Middle Seat

When she woke up, the father was changing his son’s diaper. He was doing it right there in the middle seat.

She was stunned. She’d never seen someone change a diaper in a passenger seat with another traveler just inches away.

She suspects he waited until she fell asleep. By the time she noticed, he was already finishing.

Into the Seatback Pocket

After he finished, he stuffed the used diaper into the seatback pocket in front of his son. That’s where passengers often keep phones, books, and personal items.

She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. It felt unsanitary and inconsiderate.

Many airplane bathrooms include changing tables for situations like this. Using them keeps messes contained and away from other passengers.

Flight Attendant Says No

Soon after, flight attendants came through collecting trash. The father tried to hand one of them the dirty diaper.

The flight attendant refused and told him to take it to the lavatory. He said okay.

At that point, she assumed the problem was solved. She expected him to get up and throw it away properly.

Back in the Pocket Again

As soon as the flight attendant walked away, he put the diaper back into the seatback pocket. That’s when she reached her limit.

She turned to him and loudly told him to take it to the lavatory immediately. She didn’t scream, but other passengers turned to look.

He seemed surprised, said okay, and finally took the diaper to the bathroom. He and his son stayed quiet for the rest of the flight.

Speaking Up Loudly

She has sympathy for parents traveling with young kids. She knows flights can be hard on families.

Still, she doesn’t think changing a dirty diaper in a passenger seat and storing it in a seatback pocket was okay. She’s left wondering whether raising her voice was too much, or whether it was the only way to get him to do what the flight attendant had already asked.
