Babysitter Says She Quit on the Spot After Mom Offered $50 for an 8-Hour Day and Started Insulting Her
What started as a simple babysitting arrangement quickly turned into something she didn’t expect. She’s 22 and had been helping a family every weekday morning for about an hour. Her role was straightforward. Get two kids ready, help them start their day, and take them to school using Uber.
She Was Already Being Flexible
She charged $16 an hour, which is minimum wage where she lives. Even then, she often stayed a little longer without charging extra, trying to be helpful and keep things easy for the family.
That kind of flexibility usually builds trust over time. It also sets an expectation that both sides will treat each other fairly.
The Request Changed the Situation
Recently, the mom asked if she could cover a full day during the kids’ break, from 7:30 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon. That’s a big jump from an hour to a full workday.
She agreed and kept her rate the same, which would already be a significant increase in total pay for the day. That felt reasonable given the hours involved.
The Pay Conversation Took a Turn
Instead of sticking with the hourly rate, the mom pushed for a flat daily rate. That’s when things started to feel off.
She suggested $115 for the full day, which actually works out to less than her hourly rate. Even that wasn’t acceptable to the mom.
The Offer Didn’t Match the Work
The mom came back with an offer of $50 for the entire day. For eight hours of childcare, that breaks down to far below minimum wage.
That’s what shifted the situation from a negotiation to something that felt disrespectful. It wasn’t just a lower offer, it didn’t reflect the value of the work at all.
The Conversation Became Personal
When she said that rate didn’t work for her, the response escalated quickly. Instead of continuing the discussion, the mom started yelling and making personal comments. At that point, it wasn’t just about money anymore, it was about how she was being treated.
She Made a Decision in the Moment
She chose to quit right then and there and leave. It wasn’t something she planned in advance, but it felt like the only option in that moment.
When a conversation crosses into disrespect, it can make staying feel worse than walking away. That’s what drove her decision.
The Messages Didn’t Stop
After she left, the situation didn’t end. The mom continued texting, calling her unprofessional and criticizing her for not giving notice.
From the mom’s perspective, the focus shifted to being left without childcare. From her perspective, the issue was how the situation had unfolded in the first place.
This Was More Than Just a Pay Disagreement
Negotiating rates is normal in situations like this. What made this different was how quickly it escalated and how personal it became.
A disagreement over money doesn’t usually lead to insults. Once it does, the working relationship often can’t go back to what it was.
The Question She’s Left With
She knows quitting was the right choice, but she’s questioning how she handled it. Walking away immediately left the family without time to find someone else.
At the same time, staying in that moment would have meant accepting behavior she wasn’t okay with. That’s the balance she’s trying to sort through now.
