Male and female neighbor arguing with each other over a white picket fence

Her Neighbor’s Car Detailing Customers Kept Parking in Her Driveway Every Weekend, So She Put Up a Sign Charging $10 To Park, and Now He Says She’s Hurting His Business

A woman’s neighbor runs a small car detailing business out of his garage. At first, his customers only occasionally parked in her driveway, but as business picked up, it started happening almost every weekend.

After asking him to stop several times, she warned him she’d put up a sign charging $10 per car per day. When customers kept parking there anyway, she followed through, and now he says she’s hurting his business.

Car Detailing Out of His Garage

Her neighbor started detailing cars from his home garage. It’s a small business, but it’s grown steadily.

Running a business from home can save money on rent and overhead. But it can also create issues with neighbors when customers start coming and going.

At first, she didn’t mind. It seemed like a small side business that wouldn’t affect her much.

Occasional Cars in Her Driveway

Early on, a customer would sometimes leave a car in her driveway while he worked on another one. He always said it would only be there for a short time.

Because it didn’t happen often, she let it go. She didn’t want to make a big deal out of something that seemed temporary.

As long as it stayed occasional, she figured it wasn’t worth causing tension. That changed as his business got busier.

Busy Weekends and a Blocked Spot

Over time, customer cars started showing up regularly, especially on weekends. She’d come home to find someone parked in her usual spot.

Other times, she’d be ready to leave and have to wait for a customer to move a car. It became an ongoing inconvenience.

Even if the cars weren’t there long, it was still her driveway. She was tired of planning her day around his business.

Repeated Requests to Stop

She talked to her neighbor about it several times. Each time, he apologized and said he’d remind his customers not to park there.

But it kept happening. Eventually, she told him plainly that she didn’t want his customers using her driveway anymore.

He said he understood and would take care of it. Soon after, another customer parked there anyway.

Warning About a $10 Sign

She went back to her neighbor and reminded him that she’d already asked him to stop. She told him that if his customers kept using her driveway, she’d put up a sign charging $10 per car per day.

He didn’t seem happy with that idea. Still, he told her he’d handle it.

When customers continued parking there, she decided she’d had enough. She believed she’d given him plenty of chances.

Customer Parking for $10 per Day

She put up a sign at the end of her driveway that read “Customer Parking, $10 per car per day.” She wanted to make it clear that parking there wasn’t free.

Since the sign went up, his customers haven’t parked in her driveway. The problem she’d been trying to solve finally stopped.

For her, the sign worked. After months of asking, she finally had her driveway back.

Bad for His Business

Her neighbor came over and told her the sign was out of line. He said it made his customers uncomfortable and made his business look bad.

He also said charging people for temporary parking was ridiculous. In his view, she could have simply put up a no-parking sign.

For a small business, customer impressions matter. A sign suggesting customers might be charged for parking could make some people less likely to return, which could cost him money.

Towing Was Never the Goal

Some people have suggested she could have just had the cars towed. She considered it, but didn’t want to escalate things that far over cars parked only temporarily.

Towing can cost drivers hundreds of dollars and create bigger conflicts between neighbors. She also didn’t want to deal with a different customer every time.

Her main goal was for her neighbor to take responsibility for keeping his customers off her property. Now she’s left wondering whether the $10 sign was a fair way to finally get his attention, or whether a simple no-parking sign would have solved the problem without damaging their relationship.
