Young woman falling asleep at her desk

The Neighbors’ Answer to Her 2 A.M. Barking Dog Problem Left Her Speechless, and Now She’s Wondering How Much Longer She Can Go Without Sleep

A woman and her husband moved into their first home about a month ago. Within a week, the German shepherd that lives behind them started barking almost every night between 2 and 3 a.m.

They’ve talked to the dog’s owners, called animal control, and kept a log of every incident. Nothing has changed, and the couple is running on broken sleep in a house they were supposed to be enjoying.

First Home, First Month

Buying a first home is a huge milestone. For many couples, it represents years of saving and a major financial commitment.

Between down payments, closing costs, and moving expenses, buying a house can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars up front. After all that, the couple was looking forward to finally settling in.

Instead, their first weeks in the house have been defined by exhaustion. The excitement of owning a home has been overshadowed by sleepless nights.

Barking Between 2 and 3 a.m.

About a week after they moved in, the neighbor’s dog started barking constantly at night. The barking usually starts around 2 or 3 in the morning.

It’s loud enough to hear clearly from their bedroom. Even with windows closed, the noise wakes them up.

The couple has been woken up almost every night. They haven’t had a full night’s sleep in weeks.

Talking to the Older Couple

The dog lives with an older couple who live behind them. The couple decided to go talk to them about the barking.

The owners explained that the dog actually belongs to their adult son, who doesn’t live there. They’ve been taking care of it.

The woman says she loves dogs and understands that dogs bark. She just needed help finding a way to get some sleep.

Told to Pray About It

When she explained how much the barking was affecting them, the older couple told her to pray about it. They said things would get better.

She doesn’t want to make fun of anyone’s beliefs. But she was hoping for a practical solution, not reassurance.

The owners told her they’d already done everything they could to keep the dog quiet. They didn’t offer any new plan.

German Shepherd Kept Outside

The dog is a German shepherd, a large and energetic breed that often needs plenty of exercise and attention. From what she can tell, it’s kept in a cage outside nearly all day.

It only comes out to use the bathroom. She suspects being confined for so long is part of why it barks so much.

The owners said they tried using a muzzle, but the dog figured out how to get around it. To her, it seems the dog may need owners who can better meet its needs.

Animal Control Visit

She called animal control to check on the dog’s condition. Officials found that the dog was healthy and properly cared for.

That ruled out neglect, but it didn’t solve the barking problem. The noise has continued.

She’s also kept track of every time the dog barks at night. Despite her documentation and calls, nothing has really changed.

Broken Sleep and Its Cost

Losing sleep night after night can affect every part of life. It can make work harder, lower energy, and affect mood and health.

Some people in similar situations spend money on white noise machines, earplugs, or soundproofing. Those fixes can range from small purchases to hundreds or even thousands of dollars for window upgrades or insulation.

The couple didn’t expect to spend extra money just to sleep in their new home. They’re hoping to find a solution that doesn’t require major changes to their house.

Documenting Every Night

She’s continuing to log each night the dog barks. She hopes that record will help if she needs to take further action.

For now, she’s frustrated and exhausted. After finally buying their first home, she’s left wondering how long they’ll have to keep losing sleep before someone can help them find a real solution.
