Woman Says She Took Out a $40,000 Loan for Her Boyfriend and Now He’s Refusing To Pay Her Back After They Broke Up

What started as financial help during a relationship has now turned into a massive debt she’s carrying completely on her own.

She says she loaned her ex-boyfriend roughly $40,000 while they were together. The money came from a personal loan and credit line through American Express that exists entirely under her name. At the time, she trusted that he would repay her.

The Money Went Into a Shared Account

According to her, the funds were transferred into a shared bank account that her ex had direct access to.

She also says she has banking records showing that he later withdrew or used the money toward credit cards that were solely in his name, which she believes helps establish exactly where the money went.

There Was Never a Written Contract

One of the biggest complications is that the repayment agreement was verbal rather than written down formally.

Still, she believes there is evidence showing he acknowledged the debt because he made five monthly payments to her after the breakup through Apple Cash. Those payments reportedly matched the exact monthly amount owed on the loan.

The Payments Suddenly Stopped

Things changed after the relationship ended. She says communication completely broke down, and he stopped making payments altogether.

Since then, she has been left responsible for the full debt despite the fact that she claims the money was ultimately used by him.

She’s Been Collecting Evidence

At this point, she has started gathering as much documentation as possible before moving forward legally.

According to her, she has records showing the loan exists solely in her name, proof the money entered the shared account, transaction history connected to his personal credit cards, Apple Cash payment records, and text conversations discussing repayment.

She has also already sent him a formal demand letter requesting repayment.

The Financial Imbalance Makes It Feel Worse

Part of what’s making the situation even more overwhelming is the financial difference between them now. She says she is currently unemployed, while her ex reportedly earns around $500,000 a year.

That imbalance has made the situation feel even more unfair and emotionally draining because she’s left carrying a massive financial obligation while he appears to have moved on comfortably.

She’s Considering Suing Without a Lawyer

Because of the amount involved, she’s now thinking about filing a civil lawsuit herself instead of hiring an attorney she may not be able to afford.

At the same time, she knows a case involving tens of thousands of dollars could quickly become complicated, especially without a formal written agreement.

She’s Trying to Figure Out Whether She Has a Real Case

Right now, she’s questioning whether the evidence she already has would realistically be enough to support repayment in court.

She’s also trying to understand what legal argument would apply best, whether that’s breach of an oral contract, unjust enrichment, promissory estoppel, or something else entirely.

The Situation Has Become More Than a Breakup

What started as trust inside a relationship has now become a financial situation that could affect her for years.

Now she’s left trying to determine whether the evidence she collected is strong enough to hold him legally accountable for money she believes he clearly agreed to repay.
