Her Husband Called Her Cold for Not Wanting His Ex’s Sons on Their First Family Vacation, and She’s Ready to Cancel the Whole Thing
A 41-year-old mother had finally booked the family vacation she and her husband had talked about for years. Then her husband and his ex decided two teenage boys from his past relationship should come along, and now she’s thinking about canceling the whole trip.
She and her 44-year-old husband have been married for seven years. They have two kids together, and he also has a 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, along with two stepsons from that time who still see him as family.
A Blended Family
The couple’s kids are a 9-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter. Her husband’s 12-year-old daughter is also a big part of their household and joins in on family life regularly.
Everyone lives fairly close to each other, which keeps the kids connected. Birthdays, holidays, and family gatherings usually include the whole extended group.
Former Stepsons Still Close
When her husband was with his ex, he helped raise her two boys from an earlier marriage. He’s not their legal parent, but they’ve always thought of him as family, and he’s stayed very close to them.
She respects that relationship. The boys have been around for years, and she’s never had a problem including them in family events.
The First Real Vacation
For years, the couple had talked about taking their kids on a real vacation. Between work, school, and a younger child at home, it just never seemed to happen.
This summer, they finally made it work. It was meant to be their first trip that wasn’t a visit to relatives or a short weekend away.
A Week at a Big Resort
They booked a full week at a large resort with the kids. A trip like that can easily run several thousand dollars once flights, lodging, park tickets, and meals are added up.
For a family of five, that’s a big investment. The couple planned and saved for it with the idea that it would be a special week focused on their own family.
An Argument Between the Kids
A few weeks ago, her husband told his ex about the trip since their daughter would be going. Later, during an argument at her mom’s house, the 12-year-old told her older brothers that she was going on vacation and they weren’t.
Since then, the boys have been upset with her. They’ve been making comments about the trip whenever she comes over, and the tension between the kids has been building.
An Ex Who Offers to Pay
To fix it, her husband and his ex came up with a plan to bring both boys on the trip. His ex offered to pay for everything, including flights, a hotel room, park tickets, food, and anything else they’d need.
Covering two teenagers for a full week at a resort isn’t cheap. The ex is willing to spend what would likely be thousands of dollars so the boys feel included and the kids don’t hold a grudge against each other.
Her husband thinks it’ll be fun. He points out that everyone has known each other for years and says it won’t cost the couple anything extra.
More Than a Money Question
For her, the issue isn’t the cost. Adding two teenagers changes the entire trip, bringing more planning, more responsibility, more people to keep track of, and less time for the family to enjoy together.
When she told her husband she wasn’t comfortable with it, he accused her of treating the boys like strangers. She told him she understands how much he loves them and respects that relationship, but that doesn’t mean every family vacation has to become a big group trip.
She also doesn’t think a single argument between the kids should reshape a trip they spent years planning. None of it is the boys’ fault, but she doesn’t want their first family vacation redesigned because of it.
A Trip That Might Be Canceled
The boys haven’t been told about the idea yet, which is the only thing keeping this from becoming a bigger mess. That still leaves the adults to sort out what happens next.
She’s now seriously considering canceling the vacation if her husband insists on bringing the boys. That could mean losing deposits or paying cancellation fees on top of disappointing their own kids, and she’s left weighing whether giving up the trip entirely is better than going on a very different one than she planned.
