They Paid for a Major Tree Trim Just Months Ago to Keep the Peace, but Their Neighbor Still Demands They Take Down Every Tree on Their Property
A woman and her family have always gone out of their way to keep the peace with one particular neighbor. They trim their large trees regularly and recently paid for a major cut on one of them.
Now the neighbor wants every tree on their property taken down. He says his insurance will go up because of them, and he’s worried they could catch fire and spread flames to the fence.
A Neighbor They Try to Accommodate
The family has a history of trying to make this neighbor happy. When he’s raised concerns before, they’ve done their best to address them.
Keeping a good relationship with neighbors matters to them. They’d rather solve problems than create tension.
A Major Trim Just Months Ago
A few months ago, they paid for a major trim on one of the trees. The work was meant to keep it healthy and reduce any risk to nearby property.
They thought that would ease any concerns. Instead, it seems the neighbor wants much more.
Thousands Spent Every Two Years
The family hires professional tree-trimming companies to care for their larger trees every two years. Each round of work costs thousands of dollars.
Professional tree care isn’t cheap. Large trees often require special equipment, crews, and safety measures, which can make even routine trimming a big expense.
A Request to Remove Them All
Now the neighbor has asked them to cut down all of their trees. He didn’t ask for more trimming or a specific fix, he wants them gone.
That’s a huge request. Mature trees can provide shade, privacy, and curb appeal, and many homeowners see them as an important part of their property.
A Fire Risk Theory
The neighbor says the trees could catch fire. If that happened, he believes the fire could spread to the fence and then to his property.
He presented it as a serious safety issue. The family, however, has been maintaining the trees for years.
An Insurance Increase He Blames on Them
He also told them his homeowners insurance will go up because of their trees. He seems to believe removing them will keep his costs down.
Insurance companies sometimes look at nearby risks when setting rates. But that doesn’t automatically mean a neighbor is responsible for removing healthy trees on their own property.
The Cost of Taking Trees Down
Removing large trees can be far more expensive than trimming them. Depending on the size and location, taking down a single mature tree can cost anywhere from hundreds to several thousand dollars.
If they removed every tree, the total could climb even higher. They’d also lose the shade and privacy those trees provide, which could raise cooling costs and change the look and value of their home.
A Line Between Neighborly and Too Far
The family wants to know what the right step is now. They’re unsure whether they’re obligated to remove the trees or whether continued trimming is enough.
They’ve already spent thousands trying to be considerate. Now they’re left deciding how far they’re willing to go to keep the peace before saying no to a request that could cost them far more than money.
