Daughter-in-Law Still Wants an Apology for Her Wedding Being Overshadowed, After the Bride’s Sister-in-Law Went Into Labor Mid-Reception
A mother’s son got married in early July, and halfway through the reception, her daughter went into labor a month early. Months later, her new daughter-in-law still hasn’t let it go, and now the feud is threatening to split up a family birthday dinner.
The two younger women never got along well to begin with. The mother thought the early birth was something everyone would eventually move past, but it’s turned into an ongoing fight with no sign of ending.
Two Women Who Don’t Get Along
Her daughter-in-law and her daughter have very different personalities, and they’ve never really clicked. The daughter-in-law thinks the daughter is stuck up, while the daughter finds the daughter-in-law annoying.
For the most part, they’ve stayed civil around each other. They don’t go out of their way to cause problems, but there’s always been tension under the surface.
A Money Gap Between Them
The mother believes part of the friction comes from money. There’s a big financial gap between the two women, and she suspects her daughter-in-law feels some jealousy about it.
Differences like that can quietly shape how people see each other. When one person seems more comfortable financially, small comments or habits can come across as showing off, even when nobody means them that way.
A Wedding in Early July
Her son and his wife married in early July. Weddings take months of planning and often cost thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars, so the day carried a lot of weight for the couple.
Things were going smoothly at the reception. Then, partway through, the mother’s daughter, who wasn’t due until early August, had her water break.
Labor a Month Early
Her daughter had to be rushed to the hospital. The mother left the wedding to be with her, while her husband stayed behind at the reception.
From that point, the focus of the evening shifted. Many guests were anxiously waiting for news about the daughter and the baby instead of celebrating the newlyweds.
A First Grandchild
The baby was the first grandchild in the entire family, which made the news even bigger. Her daughter delivered a healthy baby boy later that night.
For the family, it was a joyful moment. For the bride, it meant her wedding night had been overshadowed by something nobody could have planned.
An Apology She Won’t Give
Since the wedding, the two women have argued about it constantly. The daughter-in-law wants an apology for the way the birth took attention away from her big day.
Her daughter refuses. She points out that she didn’t choose to go into labor early, and she doesn’t believe she owes anyone an apology for giving birth.
Birthday Dinner Ultimatum
The conflict came to a head ahead of her husband’s birthday this weekend. The family plans to celebrate at a restaurant, so the mother called her daughter-in-law to check on her allergies and make sure the food would work for her.
Her daughter-in-law asked if the mother’s daughter would be there. When the mother said yes, the daughter-in-law said neither she nor her husband would attend if that was the case.
The mother asked if she was serious, and she said she was. The mother then told her she needed to get over her wedding being overshadowed by someone going into labor, and that the whole thing had become ridiculous.
Caught Between Her Children
Her daughter-in-law responded by calling her a harsh name and accusing her of favoring her daughter. The mother sees it differently, since she raised her daughter and the early birth wasn’t anything her daughter could control.
She’s not going to uninvite her daughter from her own father’s birthday. Still, she’s wondering whether she should apologize for how she spoke to her daughter-in-law, knowing that if she doesn’t, her son may not show up to celebrate his dad, and the rift could stretch well past one birthday dinner.
