She Laughed Off Her Coworker’s Serial Killer Jokes for Years Until He Said She Could Sell Her 8-Year-Old Daughter for Money and Now She Can’t Stop Connecting His Decade of Unexplained Injuries
She’d worked for a well known delivery company in the Midwest for about a decade, and around the same time she started, a coworker she referred to as Bill joined the same local branch. He was an average looking white man in his 50s, never married, no kids, and without any close friends that she’d ever noticed. Before settling back in their small hometown, he’d spent years as a long haul truck driver, moving from city to city whenever he grew tired of wherever he was living, mentioning places like Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, and Atlanta as stops along the way.
Early on, she and another coworker used to joke that Bill fit the profile of a serial killer almost too well. Part of that joke came from the fact that he’d intentionally bought and renovated an abandoned bank building in the roughest part of town to live in, which naturally led to jokes about him keeping people locked away in the old vault. Beyond being a little creepy, having poor hygiene, and occasionally showing a quick temper, he generally got along fine with everyone at work, and she’d even had some genuinely good conversations with him given some shared interests between them.
The Scratches That Started It
The first moment that actually unsettled her came about two years after he’d started. One morning, he exploded at their manager during a daily meeting over something minor. The next day, he showed up with three deep scratches running down his arm. When she asked what happened, he laughed it off, saying a lady friend had gotten too excited. She and her coworker joked again about checking the vault, assuming maybe he simply had a more active dating life than they’d realized.
A few months after that, he came in with an enormous bruise across his face, explaining it away as an opossum getting into his bathtub and him falling while chasing it out with a broom. She didn’t believe that story at all, though another coworker figured he’d probably just gotten drunk and fallen somewhere.
The Comment About Her Daughter
A few years later, during a stretch when their workplace was under evaluation and everyone was worried about potentially losing their jobs, Bill walked up while she was talking with a coworker and told her that if she ever needed more money, she could always sell her pretty little daughter, then laughed and walked off. Her daughter was only 8 years old at the time, and she’d never once discussed her with him directly. That comment led her to realize he’d been her Facebook friend the entire time, with full access to her family photos.
She removed him immediately and started actively avoiding him afterward, genuinely disturbed by what he’d said. A few months later, he showed up with what looked like a large, swollen bite mark on his arm. By then she was uncomfortable enough around him that she didn’t even ask what had happened.
Checking for Missing Persons on Her Own
Instead, she started quietly checking local missing persons reports, unable to shake the feeling that his repeated injuries looked like the kind someone might get if another person was fighting back against them. She mentioned her concerns to a few coworkers, but they brushed it off and told her to mind her own business. She never found any missing persons cases nearby, so eventually she let the concern go, at least for a while.
Years later, he came to work with another black eye and a swollen lip. By that point they’d started speaking casually again, so she asked what happened, and he claimed a friend had been teaching him self defense techniques and gotten carried away. That explanation felt just as unbelievable as the others, and she checked for missing people again, still finding nothing in the immediate area.
The Wound He Wouldn’t Explain
Now, he’d shown up with a large wound on his foot. When another coworker asked what happened, Bill simply said he didn’t want to bore anyone with the details and walked away without further explanation. That latest unexplained injury pulled her back into thinking about the entire pattern stretching across the past decade, the scratches, the bruise, the bite mark, the black eye, each one paired with an explanation that never quite held together.
She realized that even though she’d never found any missing persons reports specifically in their immediate area, there was a much larger city only about 40 minutes away, one where people went missing far more frequently than in their small town. That detail made her start wondering whether she’d been overlooking a broader pattern simply because she’d been searching in too narrow a radius all along.
Weighing What She Actually Has
She didn’t have any concrete evidence beyond a string of strange injuries, unusual behavior, and one deeply disturbing comment made about her own daughter years earlier. Without anything more solid than that, she didn’t feel like she had enough to bring to the police in any way that would actually be taken seriously or lead to real investigation.
Part of her had even considered taking matters into her own hands, whether that meant following him directly or placing a GPS tracker on his car, though she recognized both of those options represented a significant escalation beyond anything she’d done so far. Years of dismissed concerns, brushed off by coworkers and unsupported by any local missing persons matches, had left her without a clear next step, caught between a pattern that felt increasingly hard to ignore and a complete absence of anything concrete enough to act on directly.
