His Landlord Gave His Upstairs Neighbors a Spare Key So They Can Shower in His Apartment While He’s at Work Since Their Shower is Broken
A tenant found out their landlord had given the upstairs neighbors a key to their apartment. The plan was for those neighbors to come in and use the tenant’s shower during the workday while their own bathroom was out of commission.
Nobody asked the tenant first. By the time they heard about it, the key had already been handed over and the landlord seemed surprised anyone would object.
A Plumbing Problem Upstairs
The upstairs unit has a plumbing issue that’s made their shower unusable for a few days. It’s the kind of problem that can take time to fix, especially if parts or a plumber aren’t available right away.
That left the upstairs tenants without a place to shower. The landlord decided to solve it with a plan that involved the apartment right below them.
A Text From the Landlord
That morning, the landlord texted the tenant to say he’d worked something out with the upstairs neighbors. He mentioned they might need to use the tenant’s shower during the day since the tenant is usually at work.
At first, the tenant thought he was asking permission. It sounded like the start of a conversation, not a done deal.
A Spare Key Already Handed Over
When the tenant called to talk it through, the landlord explained that he’d already given the upstairs tenant a spare key. He’d told them they could come down between 9 and 4 as long as they only used the bathroom.
The tenant immediately said no. The landlord seemed surprised, reminded them it was only temporary, and asked what else he was supposed to do since the neighbors needed somewhere to shower.
Neighbors They Barely Know
The tenant has only spoken to the upstairs neighbors about twice. They don’t know them well enough to feel comfortable with them walking into their home, let alone while they’re away at work.
Having someone else in the apartment means access to everything inside, not just the bathroom. Personal belongings, private documents, and valuables would all be within reach of people the tenant barely knows.
Rent for a Private Home
Part of what the tenant pays for each month is privacy. Renting an apartment means having a space that’s theirs alone, where nobody else comes and goes without notice.
Handing out a key undermines what that rent is supposed to cover. The tenant is paying full price for a private unit, and the landlord has turned part of it into a shared bathroom without offering anything in return.
It could also create costs for the tenant. If anything goes missing or gets damaged, or if they feel they need to change the locks, they may end up paying for problems they didn’t create.
Options That Cost Money
The landlord does have other choices. He could cover a nearby hotel room for a few nights, pay for day passes at a local gym with showers, or rush the plumbing repairs.
Each of those options would cost him money. Using the tenant’s apartment was the free solution, and it pushed the burden onto someone who had nothing to do with the broken shower.
A Lease Renewal in Doubt
The tenant has eight months left on their lease. Until this happened, they’d planned to renew and stay in the apartment long term.
Now that plan feels shaky. Moving comes with its own costs, from deposits and application fees to movers and time off work, but staying with a landlord who hands out keys without asking feels just as uncertain.
Eight Months Left
The tenant can’t believe a landlord would give another tenant access to their home just because a shower broke. They’re wondering whether this is even allowed and what they can do to stop it.
For now, they’re stuck living under a landlord they no longer trust while a spare key to their apartment sits upstairs. Every day they head to work, they’ll be wondering whether someone else is walking through their home while they’re gone.
