His Neighbor Yelled at Him for Looking at Their Garden From His Own Kitchen, So Now He Waves Every Time He Sees Him
A 31-year-old man was sitting by his open kitchen window with his morning coffee when his neighbor started shouting at him from across the yard. The complaint was that he was enjoying the neighbor’s garden too much, just by looking out his own window.
The exchange quickly turned into insults and vague threats. Now he’s decided he isn’t changing a thing, and if anything, he plans to wave hello every time he sees his neighbor outside.
A View From the Kitchen
He lives in a multi-unit building, and his kitchen window faces a house directly across the way. Both properties have backyards with gardens, and from his kitchen, he can see the neighbors’ yard clearly.
He admits it’s a nice view. The garden is a simple setup with a lawn, a tree, and a flower bed, but it’s pleasant to look at.
A Cat on the Windowsill
A few months ago, a cat moved in with him. The cat loves sitting on the windowsill and watching birds during the day and bats at night.
To keep him safe, he made all of his windows cat-proof. That meant he could leave them open without worrying about his pet slipping out.
Open Windows on Warm Nights
He loves fresh air and doesn’t handle heat well. When the weather’s warm and he’s home, his kitchen window is almost always open, including overnight.
Keeping the windows open is also a practical way to stay cool without running fans or air conditioning around the clock. That can make a noticeable difference on summer utility bills, especially in an apartment that heats up quickly.
Morning Coffee by the Window
Since his apartment doesn’t have a balcony, the windowsill has become his favorite spot. He often sits there with his coffee, checks his email, and relaxes before heading out for the day.
He’s careful not to bother anyone while he’s there. He doesn’t play loud music or stare at the neighbors, and most of the time he’s looking at his phone.
A Shout From the Garden
One morning, he had to leave a few hours earlier than usual. He was sitting at the window trying to wake up when he heard his neighbor yelling from the garden that he could close his window for once.
It took him a moment to realize the neighbor was talking to him. When he asked what the problem was, the neighbor said his window was open every morning and he was sitting there enjoying their beautiful garden.
He laughed and suggested his neighbor find better hobbies than bothering people first thing in the morning. That’s when things really escalated.
Get a Job
The neighbor completely lost his temper. He said it wasn’t normal to have a window open so often, told him to close it more, and insisted it wasn’t his beautiful garden to enjoy.
He also told him to get a job and threw in a few more insults and some vague threats. The man told him he didn’t understand the problem, that he should mind his own business, and that he wasn’t going to change anything just because it bothered him.
He found the job comment especially strange. He works and was getting ready to leave early that day, so the assumption that he sits around at home all day didn’t match his life at all.
A Son Living With His Parents
The man thinks the neighbor is an adult son living with his parents in an annex attached to their house. The weekend before, he’d overheard a loud argument between the neighbor and his father.
From what he heard, the neighbor seemed to feel controlled and stuck at home. That made him feel a little sorry for the guy, even though being insulted and threatened by a stranger still wasn’t okay.
It also gave the outburst some context. Someone frustrated with their own living situation may lash out at whoever seems easiest to blame, even if it’s the person across the yard drinking coffee.
Waving Across the Yard
He’s not planning to close his window or change his morning routine. Instead, he’s decided to give himself a new side mission of greeting his neighbor politely every time he sees him in the garden.
He jokes that the family could even add some birdhouses so his cat has more to watch. But with insults and threats already thrown his way, he’s left wondering whether a friendly wave will calm things down or just keep the tension simmering every time that window opens.
